    Product Description
Dao Shaman Scroll. Piece over 200 years old.
The Dao ethnic group is made up of several local groups: Dao Lo Giang, Dao Đo (Red Dao), Dao Tien (Dao aux Sapèques), Dao Lan Tien, Dao Quan Chet (Dao with tight pants), Dao Ao Dai (Dao with Tunic), Dao Dai Ban, Dao Coc Ngang, Dao Coc Mun, Dao Tam Dao… The Dao in Vietnam emigrated from the provinces of origin of Fukien, Guangdong, Guangxi (China) from the 13th to the 20th century.
The Dao ethnic group in Vietnam lives in the provinces of the middle and upper regions in the North. It often occupies land at any altitude and live as good neighbors with other ethnic groups such as Hmong, Tay, Thai, Muong, Viet, Hoa… Its main resources come from agriculture, by planting rice and corn.
Normally, the Dao wear a short jacket, over which they put on a tunic down to the knees for special occasions. The hair is pulled up in a bun at the nape of the neck or shaved around the edge with the exception of a tuft at the top of the head. In general, Dao women wear a patalon and a long tunic with a slit in the front. And men often wear indigo-dyed cotton pants, tied at the waist with a wide belt like all groups. It is customary for the Dao to wear silver or bronze jewelry.
Daos have their own marriage customs. To get married, young people must not only obtain parental approval but also have "matching" dates of birth. The young man asks the future in-laws to settle there and work voluntarily for 3 or 4 days. After a month or two, he returns there for a second stay, in which he can talk to his fiancée and share his bed. Then he goes home to prepare for the wedding if the fiancée's family agrees.
In spiritual life, the Dao ethnic group is influenced by the three religions, especially that of Taoism, which manifests itself in seasonal festivals or in prayer sessions to implore protection against events: illness, childbirth, funerals, natural calamity. . The Dao practice ancestor worship at home or at the house of the head of the lineage.
For a long time, the Dao in Vietnam have been known for a wide variety of genres of folk art and literature including old tales, humorous tales, fables, riddles, folk songs. Among the folk songs, the most popular are the pả dung, a sort of lyrical alternating song.
